The Story on Em
My students know me as “Ms. Emily”, but my full name is Emily Bolhuis. I taught my first piano lesson over 20 years ago and have been teaching ever since.
You could say I’m a ‘Singing Piano Teacher’. While my professional training is actually in voice, I've actually been teaching piano longer than I have singing. But oh, believe me -- I LOVE teaching singing :-)
I hold a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Dalhousie and an Artist Diploma in Vocal Performance with a Concentration in Opera from the University of Toronto. Fun Fact: I'm also 'Emily Ballhouse'. That's my stage name, as I'm also a Recording Artist. Google me and see what comes up, if you're curious ;-)
I started taking piano lessons when I was 9 years old, did the RCM piano system, played in a band growing up and that was it - the piano and I became dear, lifelong friends!
I believe in what I do. I believe people need music at their very core. If you learned to talk, you can learn to sing. If you learned to walk, you can keep a rhythm. EVERYONE can learn to play and sing. Period.
And I do mean everyone! Does your child have learning challenges, sensory processing issues, ASD, etc.? I also offer Simply Music Gateway: the music therapy version of the Simply Music Piano program. It is truly magical! :-)
